After the successes of Twilight, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games, YA fiction is definitely on the rise. But what’s coming next?
While vampires and werewolves are still clearly popular, zombies appear to be the next terror of choice for YA novels. Dystopian fiction is also on its way up. And then, of course, you’ve got the dystopian-zombie mix—which is always fun. I’ve read several of these and thoroughly enjoyed them (see Enclave review).
Urban fantasy and paranormal are still going strong, filling the teen shelves at just about every bookstore I’ve been to in the last few months. I’m really happy about this—seeing as I can happily get lost in a good urban fantasy any time of day. But I’m also curious because all of the above are things we’ve all seen before. They’re coming in more numbers and with more twists, but they’ve still got the same monsters—zombies, ghosts, and vampires.
So what’s next? What’s the next big thing in YA? And will it bring a wave of similar books in its wake like Twilight did? What new thing would you like to read about—or are you content with what’s on the shelves?
