All I Want for the New Year

Dear New Year's Fairy,
In 2012 I'm not asking for much. A few more book contracts would be great, of course, and more sales of my books that are out.

But more importantly than that, I want 2012 to be the year that no child goes home crying because someone shoved them on the playground.

I want it to be the year that teenagers stop dogpiling on each other on social networks and either say kind things or nothing at all.

I'd like it to be the year of spreading kindness instead of rumors and gossip.

While you're at it, could you make 2012 the year that no child or teen has to be afraid to go home at night because of what might happen to them there?

Make it the year that those who are being abused find help.

Make it the year that teens and kids who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans*, or anything else considered "different" can go to their families and friends and find support and love instead of judgment and hatred.

I'd really like people in 2012 to stop using insults and slurs like "gay" and "retard", whether it's to refer to other people or to clothes or school assignments.

Please let 2012 be the year that adults set a good example by not bullying each other at work, by not insulting people they see on the streets or on TV, and by treating their children well.

And above all, please let this be the year that no child or teen takes their own life because they see no other way out of the bullying and abuse they suffer. Please let them all live this year.

See? I'm not asking for much at all.

  2. Yes!! Thank you for writing this. I'm a gay man but remember being bullied. I'm so glad that the youth of today are finally FINALLY getting the support and spotlight on this problem so that they can at least live happy full lives.
