Get Inspiration for your Characters (part one)

Over the next few weeks I am going to be giving you advice on how to get inspiration for your characters or how to enhance the emotions of your characters. I thought I would do this because sometimes it is really hard to come up with the emotions that you want your characters to be associated with and how this carries them through the rest of the novel.

I always find that listening to music helps with the inspiration, but we all know that there is not enough time in the World to be looking for those perfect songs that match to the characters in your story. So, here are a few of the songs that I find useful when writing for certain genres of books.

The first song is 'Human' by Ellie Goulding. She is quite famous in England but I don't know about the rest of the World. She is one of my favourite artists and makes alternative music that I find seriously amazing. Give it a listen - it would be great for if one of your characters is experiencing feelings for another character that aren't quite what they seem (or maybe of a different species!) but basically this is about sticking together whatever happens throughout your plot.

This next song is 'Better Dig Two' by The Band Perry, and this is about the obsession for someone or the fact that you can literally be addicted to one person - so much so that you would rather kill yourself than have to live without that one person. Great for a love story, or even a story based on war.

The third song is called 'She walks right through me' and it is sung by one of my favourite Youtubers OF ALL TIME, Alex Day. The somewhat hilarious video should not draw you away from the fact that is is an incredible song, and it would be useful to listen to if you are writing a fantasy, dystopia, or supernatural novel. The general story here is that two people are in love - one is a human and the other a spirit, because no-one on Earth understands the human quite like the spirit. I am in love with this song and it would be a shame if I didn't share it with you!

Here is the last song I would like to show you today - 'Unsustainable' by Muse.

I have NO WORDS.

This whole album sends musical shivers down my spine and it screams 'perfect' every time I listen to it. This song has next to no lyrics but the music is enough to form an opinion.

Just listen!

I will form another post in two weeks time and give you some more songs for inspiration.

  2. I like the last one too. Very epic, with a sci-fi soundtrack feel. Love the dissonance at the beginning. Sets the mood.

I can't listen to songs I know when I'm writing. I start singing along and get distracted.

  3. Great song recs!!! I MUST listen to music when I right and it's exactly for the reasons you touched on...to set the mood/tone, to create an atmosphere, to get into a character's head. I'm a HUGE Muse fan. You're right; this entire album is amazing. Wonderful post!

  4. A musical guide to kick-starting inspiration is a good idea. I think Kai makes a good comment above, about getting distracted, which is why the music I find inspiring does not have lyrics. (though it's not so bad if I'm listening to a song in another language!)
