Fanfiction: A Guilty Pleasure

My post is a little late today because instead of writing it last night, I got sucked into a fanfic . . .That’s right. I’m 33 years old and I love some good fanfiction.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, it’s basically taking the characters of your favorite novel and writing your own story, for fun.

I first discovered http://www.Fanfiction.net during my Twilight craze. After reading Twilight (early 2008?) I couldn’t get enough of the story. I wanted more, and at that time, I had already read Twilight and New Moon a few times. I found a story on fanfiction.net that was about Edward and Bella but from Edward’s POV and I devoured it. Then I found another, and another.

Then I wrote one.

Before you laugh, check out these history stats.

112,687 views, 276 reviews, 239 favs and 295 alerts.

To this day, I still get hits. It makes sense how a story Like FIFTY SHADES OF GREY can go from fanfic to NY Times Bestseller.

Some people frown on fanfic, but for me, it’s a way to stay with the characters I love long after the story, and if it’s all in good fun, what’s the harm? If you think of fairytale re-tellings like the books SPLINTERED, BEASTLY, and CINDER, they’re a different type of fanfiction.

So tell me, fanfiction, yay or nay?

I write Inuyasha fanfiction to combat writer's block, and to see what works and what doesn't with readers. It's also nice amid a sea of rejections to get amazing reviews from excited readers begging for more.

Definitely a guilty pleasure since I know the stigma attached to it in the publishing world. But I think my writing has improved thanks to fanfiction.
