A Day in the Writer's Life: The Secret to My Insanity

I have a bit of a crazy life. Or at least a crazy, crazy schedule. Not only do I have two book series going on at once, but I also work a full-time, high stress job, have two young kids, horses, dogs, cats, a husband...

You get the idea - busy.

And really a bit insane.

But you know what? My life's always been a bit crazy like that. I'm a work-acholic by default. When I was getting my masters degree, I worked a full-time job, was a teaching assistant, and a wrote for the college paper. Now granted, this was pre-kids, but still. Who does that? Looking back, even I feel like I was a bit insane.

Needless to say, one of the questions I get most often is how I manage to do it at all. There is no easy answer, of course, but I do have one single truth to share that might make a difference if you're in the same boat as me. Are you ready for it? Really ready?

Sleep.

Yes, you heard me right. It's sleep. I do the absolute best that I can to get a good night sleep every night, usually 8 hours or as close to it as I possible. And the truth is, I've been this way since I was a pre-teen. Good sleep = maximum output. It's a no-fail formula.

Are you now convinced that I really am crazy? Well, maybe so, but I still dare you to give it a try. If you're one of those writers struggling to maintain a full-time job, a full-time life, but still find the energy and drive to write, then I challenge you to evaluate your sleeping habits. Do you get enough? All the time? If you don't, then I dare you to make it happen for a week or two. See what happens. You might be surprised.

Or maybe I'm just crazy. You decide.

Happy Writing - oh, and Happy Banned Books Week.

  1. I have everything the same except horses. I couldn't imagine adding horses to the mix! I don't get enough sleep so challenge accepted!

  2. Sleeping is one of my favorite activities in life! However, like others, I can sometimes get off track, so this is a great "wake up call"... so to speak.
